Siboney + Andy // Secret

Breaking, Emerging Artists, Ones to Watch, Pop

December 1, 2016

After years of toil in the studio and on the live circuit, Australian-born London locals Siboney & Andy have finally released their debut EP. ‘Secret’ is the perfect bite-sized introduction to this duo who have earned their stripes as veterans of the live scene and are now aiming to truly make their mark as recording artists. Both handle song-writing duties while Siboney takes the lead on vocals and Andy helms the production and instrumentals; an approach that works well.

Each song brings an entirely new flavour to the equation, creating within the space of only 4 tracks a surprisingly compatible blend of genres. The underlying (or perhaps overlying) theme is well-crafted, good-for-your-ears pop music. But it’s a pop comprised of everything from indie, electronica and at times even a touch of folk, just for good measure.

Standout track ‘See Me Through The Night’ is a great example of their ability to come together to write a genuinely beautiful song. It serves as a great opener and really gives Siboney the opportunity to show her chops as a singer.

Their first single ‘Secret’ sees them sharing vocal duties, using the opportunity to delve into deeper, more emotive territory. As they both sing of betrayal and a forbidden love, piercing guitars both acoustic and electric give it a distinct edge. It stands in stark opposition to the following track ‘Mexico’ which immediately switches mood and brings the fun. Built around a breezy instrumental, this track was made for carefree days of sunshine and road trips.

Their first recorded outing as a duo brings a lot to the table, but it’s the marriage of their crisp, unfaltering production and Siboney’s standout vocal performances that really make this an essential release and a stellar debut effort. Watch this space!

MTV may change VMA broadcast after further ratings drop

Breaking, Business, Editors Choice, Videos

September 2, 2016

The MTV Video Music Awards have been around since 1984 – originally created as an alternative to The Grammy Awards, the show has for a long time now been considered one of the biggest players in the music award scene. But their audience’s habits are changing.

The latest award show, held on Sunday 28th August managed to attract 6.5 million viewers across Viacoms 11 television networks (including MTV). This compared to 2015 where the VMA’s pulled in over 10 million viewers on broadcast night – the ceremony is losing a lot of eyes on screens, and MTV knows why.

Traditionally, MTV broadcasts the show live at 9pm on the east coast, and then at 9pm in other time zones via tape delay. This is down to the fact that advertisers will pay more for prime time television slots.

But two days after the VMA’s, MTV have announced that they will consider airing the show live across the US in one go. This, to create a bigger buzz around the event but also because MTV is coming to understand that their audience is now online – and they need to bring the television event to them.

Sean Atkins, MTV President told Billboard: “In a world where you are multi-platforming, when I can experience it on my feed from my friends on Facebook who are in New York, are you better off just going live?” he asked. “You give everyone essentially equal access to every platform at the same time.”

Viacom announced on Monday that in total there were 149 million streams of VMA content across the Sunday event and Monday afterwards. This was a combination of live stream through the MTV.com website and video marketing on social networks like Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube.

September 1, 2016

American music legends the Black Eyed Peas have reunited to spread an important message about gun violence during the US Presidential Election. After five years apart the band have come back together to release a rendition of their song ‘Where Is The Love?’.

Originally released in 2003 for their third album Elephunk, Where Is The Love? was written by Will.i.am, Justin Timberlake, Taboo, apl.de.ap, Printz Board, Michael Fratantuno and George Pajon, Jr. The track topped the charts in both Australia and the UK.

A statement from a spokesperson for the band said that #WHERESTHELOVE “calls for calm, asking citizens of the world to stop the hate and violence that has resulted in many lives lost.” Proceeds from the song will go to Will.i.am’s own foundation i.am.angel – funding educational programs and college scholarships.

The remake features new names including Justin Timerblake (who sang and wrote on the original but wasn’t credited), Mary J. Blige, Tori Kelly, Usher and others. Find it exclusively on Apple Music, [here]

Report: Spotify hitting back at artists who sign exclusives elsewhere

Breaking, Business

August 27, 2016

Rumours have been building from the world of music streaming.

According to a report by Bloomberg released yesterday, music service Spotify has been hitting back at music artists who sign exclusive streaming deals with it’s two biggest rivals Apple Music and Tidal.

The report suggests that Spotify has been making it harder for its users to find the music of artists who have launched their albums elsewhere. People familiar with Spotify’s strategy reported that artists who have given Apple exclusive access to their new music have been told their songs won’t get included in Spotify’s Featured Playlists. This drastically decreases their presence on the platform and ability to make income from streams.

Music Manager Scooter Braun weighs in on US gun control

Breaking, Business, Editors Choice, News

June 13, 2016

Scooter Braun, manager to some of the biggest artists in the music industry, has just joined the conversation on gun control in the US. He gave his thoughts via an Instagram post featuring an image with the text ‘WE CAN DO MORE’ – this is following the Orlando night club shooting this week, the deadliest shooting in US history which left 50 people dead and 53 injured.

He said:

“Last night I was thinking about our nation…my son…this world…what I am contributing to it.. And I posted this…and today I post it again. I’m not asking Americans to lose rights..I’m not asking everyone to turn in their guns. I’m asking my fellow Americans to acknowledge we need a system to protect our future and the freedoms we claim to hold so dear.”

“We need gun control laws to add to our freedoms not take away. We need to make the right decisions for the next generation. I have so much more to say but for now all I will say is how many more speeches and tragedies will it take? We only get a certain amount of time on this earth and our responsibility is to our kids.”

“How can we look our sons and daughters in the eye with all we have now seen and not try? Not try to better this world for THEM!? We are better than this. God bless America.. But God isn’t going to change this… He gave us free choice. Let’s choose to make a difference.”

Blossoms perform ‘Charlemagne’ on BBC Introducing Stage at #BigWeekend

Breaking, Emerging Artists

May 31, 2016

Image: Gaz Jones

breaking-article-logo-transBlossoms, the five piece band from Stockport have performed their single ‘Charlemagne’ on the BBC Introducing stage at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. Not seen it yet? It sounded beautiful. Watch below:

Here’s what we had to say about them in our 2016 Predictions:

‘Hailing from Stockport, Blossoms sounds a bit like Arctic Monkeys or The Stone Roses subjected to old school pop psychedelia. Perhaps more rock than pop. The band formed in 2013, pulling on several genres. With ‘Charlemagne’ they definitely proved they have earned their own sound. Blossoms are heading out on a UK headline tour in early 2016, with their EP At Most A Kiss released on February 19th.’

Breaking, Editors Choice, Emerging Artists

May 26, 2016

breaking-article-logo-transPop electronica duo Honne have announced a new UK tour. After the success of their latest release, the EP ‘Gone Are The Days’, they’ve spent their time creating a debut album called ‘Warm On A Cold Night’ – due for release on July 22nd 2016 on iTunes, CD and Vinyl. These guys are brilliant. Here’s what we had to say about them in our 2016 Predictions:

‘The pop electronica duo Andy and James, origins from Somerset Wiltshire. After two EPs in 2014, they released both Coastal and Over Lover EPs all on their own through Tatemae Recordings. The soulful vibes and soft tunes cradle the sharp lyrical universe. Radio 1’s Annie Mac is a big fan, and a quick listen to a couple of their songs proves just how creative freedom does not have to negate radio friendly tunes. Their new EP Gone Are The Days comes out at the end of January.’
